The annual Songkran festival will be permitted to go ahead next month to stimulate tourism and the economy, but festivities must comply with disease prevention policies, raising some health fears from a physician.
Prime Minister on Wednesday signalled further relaxation of travel restrictions to boost the economy, saying the Songkran festival could be celebrated entirely, but only if social distancing laws are followed.
He gave the interview at Government House on the government's relaxing of Covid-19 steps for Songkran.
He said he expected it was possible that travel curbs might be more relaxed, which might further raise spirits at this festival time.
Meanwhile, Culture Minister said the ministry agreed to permit Songkran activities this year, but insisted disease prevention steps must be strictly upheld.
"High among the measures are social distancing and people capacity limits," he added.
Organisers of Songkran celebrations, especially those at popular venues such as Khao San Road, were able to determine for themselves whether to organize any activities this year.
Mr Sanga said the economy on the famous Khao San Road has been sluggish since the pandemic hit Thailand last year since 80 per cent of business operations on the popular street depend on international visitors.
"For certain companies such as massage shops and souvenir shops, there are no clients at all.
"For pubs and restaurants, there are only a few visitors every night. Out of 500 entrepreneurs on the lane, only 50 are still running."
