The Ministry of Energy announced yesterday that the national discount on electricity from March to May, which differed depending on the amount of electricity used and the size and type of the venue, has ended and will not be renewed. But at best the discount was merely a perfect political gesture, not a useful saving for most residences in Thailand. For most residents, the discount was 3 per cent.
The discount was enacted to ease the financial burden on households and enterprises affected by the Covid-19 crisis. It is expected to affect some 22 million homes. The statement said the discount was not extended from the energy minister himself as the situation has stabilized and many people are able to return to work, and the country has been reporting cases of virus in the single digits for weeks on a daily basis.
But Thailand has still not enabled all companies to open and millions remain out of jobs, based on government figures, particularly in the travel, hospitality industries, including pubs, nightlife, sports and entertainment centres, due to forced closures and a ban on foreign arrivals. In fact, classes stay locked, leaving millions of students trapped at home for long periods of time.
The Ministry of Power also stated on their website that the hottest season of the year has passed, and offered advice about how to save money on energy bills for anyone either out of work or operating from home.
