In Koh Samui, Buddhist Temples (Wats) and Chinese Shrines abound. Buddhism is the faith practised by the majority (over 90 per cent of citizens are Buddhist), followed by Islam, Taoism, and Christianity, as in the rest of Thailand. Paradoxically, Chinese merchants and Muslim fisherman became the first-ever settlers on the island.
Many ancient Buddhist temples and Chinese shrines are located in Koh Samui, including two remarkable religious landmarks: Samui Big Buddha, a huge 15-meter sitting Buddha overlooking the sea on the northeastern shore, and Wat Plai Laem, a majestic temple in the same location with a striking white 18-arm statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Grace and Compassion.

In Koh Samui, there are hundreds of bargains to be found when shopping. Although almost every corner of the island has a shop worth exploring, in Chaweng, Lamai and Nathon, the major shopping places are. The most variety is given by Chaweng and Lamai has a fun selection of funky little shops, but typically Nathon has the cheapest offers.
