Thong Yang Seaview is one of those places you drive past many times and think ‘that looks lovely’ but you’re on your way somewhere so probably don’t stop.
It is situated on one of Phangan’s steepest hills, actually in the middle of it. The first steep hill from Baan Kai to Haad Rin is where you will find Thong Yang Bar and Restaurant, sitting comfortably on the hill with vast dreamlike views over Baan Tai bay, the ocean over to Koh Samui and even clear views of Angthong Marine Park.
Owner Pong is a true original Phanganist who was born in Baan Tai, he and his family have stayed here on the island and have been living on this area of land for around thirty years now.
Pong and his family had a place on the beach and then decided to build Thong Yang around four years ago, it was built little by little and took one year to finish.
The defining attraction has to be the amazing view here, awesome by daytime and atmospheric at sunset, it offers an unforgettable performance all throughout the day and into the night.
Imagine Thong Yang as ‘Amsterdam Bar’ but for grown ups, and still authentic with its family run vibe, beautifully laid out terrace and mountainous jungle to gaze lovingly upon.
Diners can enjoy yummy Thai dishes such as steamed fish and you can eat and watch out over the sea. Popular dishes are the red or green curries which are cooked by Thong Yang’s Thai chefs.
They also serve a selection of western food including their delicioud and popular burger and you can enjoy promotions on drinks with happy hour from 5 to 7pm, perfect sunset gazing time!
Pont welcomes visitors into Thong Yang as if they were family yet you have the space to gather with friends and family at the large social dining tables in an airy environment overlooking the sea.
You can also chill on the comfortable traditional Thai cushions, positioned on a platform which means you too can still enjoy this amazing view. Thong Yang is the only restaurant in this area between Baan Kai and Haad Rin which sits right on the hill with great food and unbelievable views such as this one.
Pont is a very caring man as he has two children, one aged four and one of three months, they stay together here on the island.
He also has apartments for rent right next door to the restaurant but very private, covered with jungle and boasting the same wonderful view we have mentioned.
After the sun has set on Koh Phangan this area turns peaceful and still, there are not many cars or bikes driving past and you can wind away the evening being up high above the ocean which divides Phangan from the rest of the mad world beyond.
So next time you are heading for the Haad Rin hills, make sure you stop off on the way to experience a view you will definitely not forget.
