The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) aims to support a resolution at this week's meeting of the Centre for Economic Situation Administration (CESA) to reduce the required quarantine period for international visitors from 14 to 10 days.
Supant Mongkolsuthree, the chairman of the FTI, said this measure would enhance business activities.
New ideas are needed to propel the economy ahead as the world is expected to be dealing for years with the pandemic, "he added."
After canceling its meeting last Friday, CESA is scheduled to discuss the proposal this week.
This week the plan will be discussed and the FTI hopes that CESA will agree with it, "Mr. Supant said."
The Public Health Emergency Operation Centre approved a proposal late last week to reduce the required quarantine period for Special Tourist Visa (STV) visitors from 14 to 10 days.
Kiattiphum Wongrajit, Permanent Secretary for Public Health, stressed that the measure should only be applied to tourists from countries with low transmission risks.
If travelers are from countries assessed to be at higher risk than Thailand, the 14-day quarantine period will still extend.
Testing for the virus is conducted on the first, second, third, seventh, eighth, ninth, and 11th days after arrival, according to Dr. Kiattiphum.
During the first 10 days, any infection is usually detected, he added.
The FTI believes that this relaxed measure is possible because it has trust in the ability of the government to control transmissions.
Many foreign businessmen want to come to Thailand as well, the federation added.
The biggest developer of built-to-suit logistics facilities in Thailand, WHA Corporation, said last month that it wants the government to relax the quarantine period for foreign business travelers, as they complained that it is too long.
'A balance between the economy and health security should be considered by the government,' said Mr. Supant.
