Tuesday the European Union decided to expand its doors to fifteen countries except the virus-stricken US, while the pandemic has spread globally with more than 505,000 fatalities.

The piecemeal reopening of Europe comes as countries struggle to revive economic activity while fending off new Covid-19 spikes, with hotspots still surging in Latin America and the United States.
Following days of talks, EU leaders concluded the list of countries whose health status was considered secure enough to require citizens to join the bloc beginning on July 1--but the US, along with Russia and Turkey, remained noticeably omitted.
Algeria, Australia, Canada , Japan, Georgia, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea , Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay are among those on the list.
Travelers from China, where the virus first appeared late last year, will be allowed provided Beijing reciprocates and opens the door to EU citizens.
Border easing, to be checked in two weeks and left to enforce by member states, is a attempt to help revive the ravaged tourism industry on the continent, which has been choking by a ban on non-essential travel since mid-Mach.
Yet the pandemic is "not quite near to being finished" with about 10.3 million reported infections globally, the International Health Organisation has said.
"Though a number of countries have made some gains, the pandemic is now picking up worldwide," said WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus Monday.
