A sub-committee of the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration proposed to extend the state of emergency until the end of September in order to allow for the continued compulsory quarantining of people coming from abroad.
Deputy chief of the army Gen Nathapol Nakpanit, deputy chief of the CCSA panel, said on Wednesday that the executive decree on public administration in emergency situations should continue after it expires on 31 Aug.
It was necessary to ensure that people from other countries were quarantined and mobilize organizations quickly to respond to any fresh outbreak of Covid-19.
"If there is a second wave it would be unfortunate because we've been doing well for as long as 90 days [without a community infection]. I'd like to thank all people and sectors for being cooperative," Gen Nathapol said.
The quarantine period has been reliable, he said. Inside the 14-day period, infections were detected in quarantined people.
The illness remained in a person's body for as long as 30 days after infection was found, he warned.
Extending the emergency to the end of September would not generally affect people's lives and they still have the right to rally, he said.
The extension still requires formal Cabinet approval.
