Strictly Non Commercial - SUP and Tunes at Maya Koh Tao

On the lovely beach of Sairee in Koh Tao sits Maya Beach Club, the only place on the island where you will find a great dj every night playing top quality music.

Phanganist went down to meet managers Martin and Simon, we cracked open a nice cold beer and sat down to have a chat.

Martin is also the resident dj and Simon runs SUP Koh Tao which is based at Maya but you can find them both behind the bar rather than behind the scenes which is nice.

Tell us about Maya Beach Club…
Maya is a day bar which is open from 11am to 9pm, we have three or four big parties a year like for Christmas where we’ll have a dj from 3pm to 7 or 8pm.

The big theme in the music is we are strictly non commercial, we play deep house and nu disco.

What makes Maya unique?
Definitely the music but we are on the beach with sunbeds and sports activities like paddle boarding and we have a speed boat for wakeboarding.

Simon runs SUP Koh Tao from Maya Beach Club which offers stand up paddle board rental, tours and tuition on this beautiful part of Koh Tao.

We asked Simon what got him into SUP…

‘I got into SUP on Koh Tao as there was none on the island when I first came, except an old tattered one which belonged to a friend. I used to take it out every day and people would always ask where you could rent them from to which I always had to say ‘nowhere’

So after a while I decided to buy four boards and rent them out, over the last couple of years we have grown from four boards to now over twenty four with our headquarters at Maya Bar and also with boards at Windbeach Resort.

We will have more locations again soon. It's been going really well and everyone loves it and I’m happy to say that we are fast becoming one of the top things to do on Koh Tao if you're not diving.

Why do you guys love Koh Tao?
Because it’s awesome! You can go out if you want to or chill on the beach, it’s not too in your face.

People are easy to get on with here, it’s a friendly small community.
