It seems like the monsoon season is well and truly upon us! Did you all hear the storm a few nights ago?!
Whilst most of us were soundly sleeping on Sunday night after a soggy daytime which saw a lot of people reach towards the far back of their closets for that lonely jumper of warmth the heavens opened! It woke us up!
We haven’t heard rain like that for a long time! And the thunder! But if you’re a bit like us then that hammering rain and roaring thunder is a beautiful sound to lay in your comfortable bed with. We feel for those who don’t like it though and also those cats and dogs who get frightened, we’re sure that some furry friends ended up sleeping with their owners that night.
The rain has carried on into the week, it was a wet cycle into the office for Phanganist’s Emma and photographer Russell turned up wearing around ten layers of clothing and jackets for his drive in. So, although it is raining, and for locals and long termers it actually feels cold, this will not dampen our spirits and the good vibes of the magic island continue to flourish and shine!
This weather can create many laughs and crack a few smiles. There’s nothing like hanging with your neighbours and friends, catching up for lost time because no one wants to be out but someone has to do a beer or shop run. Who’s turn is it to go? And how many layers can one possibly wear?! One hardened tough nut decides they can brave it wearing no jacket or waterproof, no hat or umbrella just the shorts they are wearing and a vest but everyone laughs when they return all soaked and shivering, cowering in like some soggy puppy.
On the other hand it can be amusing to see what concoctions of outfits are worn by each other to protect oneself from getting wet in the rain if you have to go out, we have been known to adorn ourselves with plastic bags if there’s nothing else to hand and we have to be somewhere for work.
You may find yourself spending more time at home, catching up with odd jobs that have been left undone or watching that film or TV show that you haven’t seen because you’re usually out in the sunshine all day then watching the sunset at evening time.
Tourists can make use of their resorts facilities, enjoy a rejuvenating massage in the spa or treat themselves to a small makeover with some other kind of treatment. Enjoy some cuddle time with your loved ones in the room and try out all those local dishes in the restaurant.
Have you ever swam in the sea or the pool when it’s raining? If not then you should! If it’s the natural force of the sea that tempts you then make sure it is safe first but the sensation of being in the ocean with an ocean of water coming down from the skies is almost spiritual, trust us.
You can get the same effect in a swimming pool aswell and you know it will be safe, give it a try, you’re going to get wet anyway!
For Koh Phangan island to stay as beautiful as it is with its enchanting jungle hiding natural wonders it needs this rain. The greens of the jungle will become even more vibrant and the roots of the trees will be gulping with joy these waters from above, let the jungle be fed!
The rivers need to be filled up a bit, the fish are bustling for space in some so this water will be much needed welcome space and home for our little aquatic friends. And for us to enjoy the mystical waterfalls on the island at their awesome best, they need quite a bit of rain too so just remember this if you are prone to a bit of rain induced moaning!
The island wouldn’t be its paradise beauty without monsoon and rainy seasons so relax, enjoy and be patient for it to pass.
