Do you feel yourself changing? Do you feel something inside turning different, like a dial going the other way than what it is used to? It may be that the island of Koh Phangan is starting to ‘get to you’, in a good way of course.
You will probably feel like you never want to go home, never want to go back to your desk job, the pressure of ‘normal’ life and responsibilities… it sounds to us like you are becoming an ‘Island Person’.
If you want to make the transition into an Island Person even quicker than normal then we are here to help, here are some ways on how to be an island person;
No Shoes
Kick off any kind of footwear immediately! No island soul would dare be spotted in anything other than bare feet, more than likely adorned with some toe rings or ankle chains with bells on that let everyone know that you are gracing them with your presence!
After a while your feet will go a bit dirty but this just adds to how much of an islander you really are, you will become more authentic with time but if you’re in a rush then make sure to get them dirty quickly!
Elephant pants
These trousers, also known as ‘fisherman’s pants’ are an islander trademark and are popular when they have an elephant pattern on them.
They are loose, comfy and make you look like a hippy straight away!
Chang vest
You’ve probably of picked this up on Khao San Road in Bangkok already but little did you know this will be your ‘go to’ vest when you’re an islander.
Bare Chest
More popular with the lads than the ladies of course, unless you really ‘get into’ the island thing and hunt out that nude beach we sometimes hear about…
Most island lads prefer to not wear a top at all, expect some sweaty hugs if you dare go near one of them.
Bikini instead of underwear
This is for the girls, although it has been known for boys to dress like this also ha-ha. You should never wear real underwear if you want to be an island person, instead your bikini will do the same job.
Most chose to cover this with some kind of stringy dress so you can see the bikin through it. This is also a very practical solution as you never know when you’ll need to jump in a pool or float around like a mermaid in the ocean, plus you want to get that ‘all over’ bronzed tan to be able to fit in and make it seem as though you have been here for years…
Some kind of scarf
You will need a piece of extra fabric, some kind of scarf that you take with you everywhere. This is used to wipe away sweat, tie around your wrist, around your head or wherever you like, this will be your sweat wiper for the weekend.
Carry stuff in bike
Ditch your bag, no islander has a bag, instead you just carry everything on your bike. You can fit a can of change in one of the front pockets and towels, sunglasses etc can go under the seat for maximum ease of carrying stuff to the beach!
And finally, get a fan!
Any cool island person knows they have to have a fan, the bigger the better! Get ready to swoosh it around at parties, cool other people down and look pretty chillin with it...
