On the 24th of September one hundred and fifty bikers from Thailand, Malaysia and our very own Koh Phangan will be in Nakhon for the annual Children’s Day for Charlie’s Children’s Charity which has been running now for eight years.
It was started initially as Charlie himself had friends in Government so had the opportunity to visit the orphanage. He felt he could help to look after the orphanage and children.
Most of the children are found or abandoned so they have never had a Mum or Dad, the orphanage currently holds newborns from just two hours old as well. It’s only boys in the orphanage here the girls go to another orphanage about 300km away.
Today they look after 1000 children and 600 mentally handicapped who are not kids, they’re aged from 10 or 11 to 80 years old.
Charlie’s Children’s Charity only helps government funded places not private ones.
On the day of the 24th they bring every child from the orphanage to the beach and are supported by the local police. They take the children on three air conditioned buses and with the police escort they don’t stop at any red lights so they really get the VIP treatment!
They arrive at the beach where 200 volunteers come to help out. They give each child a Mum and a Dad, a family for the day.
They get every single toy to play with, every food to eat, ice cream, around 38 dishes on each table.
They have shows, a banana boat ride, bouncy castle, trampoline, paramotors, a helicopter comes and many more activities.
Every child can enjoy it all and they make them feel as normal as possible.
The day starts at 10am and they will leave at 5pm after a really full day. Each child receives a goodie bag with school stuff, clothes, underwear and such.
Two years ago they had a visit from the royal family, the personal advisor to the King spent a holiday with them and did a beautiful speech so now they’re officially recognised by the Royal Palace so this is why they are supported from the army, police and so forth.
This year there will be 37 new children arriving who have never seen the ocean, last year it was 27 so this is a lot more which is great!
It’s a great day and Koh Phangan has been behind it in a big way as everyone is very close. Carlos from the Handle Bar has been a key figure for a long time and also Allan from Escobar plays a big part.
A big thanks also to Diamond Muay Thai, they do so much for just one person. They’re closing the gym and coming here to do the opening show, it will be incredible for the kids to see an original Muay Thai show.
The jetpack people from Samui are going to do the closing show and they guarantee to take every kid up on the jet pack!
Everyone can still help! They are desperately in need of nappies and powdered milk for the babies which is not cheap to buy but you can donate it as it is the most needed!
They constantly need second hand baby clothes so if anyone at a resort or guesthouse has this or if tourists don’t need theirs anymore then they can give this, what is rubbish to us is gold for them.
The three teams from Koh Phangan will be arriving on the 23rd so you can still donate anytime up to the 22nd.
