Sweet artist Margarita was enjoying time painting on Koh Phangan, she is currently in Malaysia but will be back on the island soon...
Hi Margarita, what is your Koh Phangan story?
I had just finished a three month internship in Bangkok and did not want to go home right away so I decided to travel.
A friend mentioned that I might enjoy Koh Phangan's art scene. I decided to go and check it out and ended up staying on the island for five months.
Have you been drawing and painting since childhood?
Yes and No. I painted frequently when I was really young then didn't paint or draw at all aside from the occasional doodle during a boring english lesson when I was in secondary school.
Where did you learn your skills?
I took a painting class and several typography and graphic design classes at California College of the Arts.
What is your inspiration and style?
Recent Inspiration is Sailor Jerry Tattoo Flash, Frida Kahlo, Alice in Wonderland; Through The Looking Glass Movie, To Kill a Mocking Jay by Harper Lee, Pork Buns and Dim Sum.
Tell us about some of the projects you've done on Koh Phangan...
I painted colorful abstract geometrical shapes on Treechart Hostel’s Reception Wall reflecting the pre existing geometrical space and color scheme.
I painted large pink roses with the phrase Smell the Roses in Treechart Hostel and I painted a panel in Wanderlust Hostel reflecting the traveling spirit and the lush jungle of Koh Phangan.
And are you enjoying Malaysia?
Malaysia is great. The people are warm and welcoming like family and the food is incredibly delicious.
What are your plans and projects for the rest of the year?
I recently finished a mural in Kuala Lumpur reflecting the city scape and culture. I will be volunteering in Nepal for a month and will return to Koh Phangan to paint a couple more murals.
And what do you enjoy about Koh Phangan in your free time?
I enjoyed sitting and having a good think on the tree swings next to Beach Bed and Bar while I listen to Fat Freddy's Drop.
I had a great time last full moon dancing the night away and trying out the fire rope. Sadly I never could get it in one jump.
I enjoy cruising around on a scooter exploring the beaches on the east north and eating delicious seafood in Chaloklum. The diving at Sail Rock was amazing as well!!! Sunsets at Secret Mountain are lovely.
What would you say to the next generation of aspiring artists?
Draw Everyday!
And leave us with your life philosophy...
Try your best. Stay humble. Read good books.
