singer / guitarist / musician
Scott Lucille (July 16, 1985...29 next month!) was living in England and working as a fireman before he came to stay in Koh Samui.
He had visited the island many times before during his holidays and (seeing as there were many strikes going on and "politics" in his career) decided that it was a good time for him to follow his dreams and go to Thailand.
He first came to know about Koh Samui back in 2006 when his friend had whisked him off on a Thailand adventure to cheer him up. Scott had just recently split up with his long term girlfriend and was feeling a bit...heartbroken.
His friend knew what he was doing taking him to paradise because on the very instant that that plane landed on Koh Samui soil, Scott was hooked!!! It wasn't till a few year's later (around 2010) that he goes on to discover Samui's neighboring paradise Koh Phangan.
His connection to music came about...well, by fluke really. Don't get me wrong, Scott has always loved music.
Well anyways, to continue...around 2004 - 2005 was when he bought his first guitar. His desire to learn how to play began just as a hobby, thereupon he just took to it...and loved it!
His confidence in singing steadily increased until, suddenly, he was playing at open mic nights in Islington, London.
Then, he started to play music with a fellow that had been playing regular gigs at his mother's pub. He quickly grew comfortable on a stage with all this practice with performing in front of an audience!!!
Phanganist was wondering, "What makes Scott Lucille unique as a musician?" He told us, "I think my music catalogue makes me unique. Sometimes, I can be playing Michael Jackson, and then unexpectedly switch to Nirvana, then next to Frank Sinatra, and then bring it back around again with Oasis. I likes to try and hit as many different genres as I can throughout my sets."
He also has been known to play those (classic type) songs like Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and I Will Survive;
and he loves the 'Radio 1 Live Lounge' sort of thing (where an artist puts a different twist to a song) and even gets a kick out of trying to emulate the style.
His favorite place on Koh Samui would have to be...any place where he can enjoy one of the islands many beautiful views. A Scotts rated "top picks" location (which to him "is pretty far up the list") for this island is, Jungle Club;
and his favorite on Koh Phangan is...
The Harp Bar...but more than that, this place is also the location for one of his regular gigs...where, every time he plays, the staff is always treating him so nicely.
He believes he can offer the Koh Phangan music scene…
A lot he says, "especially with this idea that The Harp Bar has in mind for me, scheduling my performance dates around the Full Moon and the Black Moon Party's...as the warm up sets and the hangovers!!! That way, fullmoon party-goers can get a nice taste of some good live music before heading off to their fullmoon madness; this to be followed soon after anew, yet in a different way, and for (most likely) different reasons...to get some chilled out acoustic tunes to ease their hangovers the following day.
Scott isn't really concentrating on his future (not yet at least) but...
He does know one thing is true...he wants to still be staying in Koh Samui.
Now, assuming all goes well and things keep on to the rhythm from up until this point...Scott will ultimately have and be owner of his own wedding or events company. For now, he just enjoys being a part of the live music scene around here and is pleased to be given the opportunity to perform at different venues across both islands.
Where (in the world) is the best place you have ever played?
"The best venue I have played at is...this is a very tough choice... I have always liked playing in Fishermans Village...and I also like to travel over to Koh Phangan since it feels new and different....
At the moment, I am very lucky to be playing at two beautiful venues....NAPASAI and ROCKPOOL....I would have to say, Rockpool just nicks the #1 spot....it has a lovely view, a lovely staff, and lovely stuff!!!"
As for the best venue ever, I'd have to say it's The Bull in Theydon Bois Essex...this is my mother pub and it is where I got my first taste of playing to a crowd...so of course, it has to be there at the top spot!!!
For the most part, Lucille has been working as a solo artist...he has been involved in great parties and weddings over the years...but, for a brief period he was in a duet with an English guy called Gary Armstrong. Such a great guy Gary, and he taught me a lot too!
His musical inspiration is...simple...Johnny Cash!!! I love people like BB King, Coldplay, and Jake Bugg...but Johnny Cash is 'The King' to me!!!"
His mother (also best friend) is the other inspiration for him; he says, "she always believes in me!!!
Scott actually came to Samui to run a bar for 2 friends of his. He soon (quickly) realised that job wasn't for him. He was in the bar for 6 weeks total!!! I knew I wanted to be a musician in Thailand.... But I did not feel I was ready!!! But the old saying... 'Its good to be thrown into the deep end' I had been in Samui 6 weeks, I was jobless and had very little other opportunities.... So I picked up the guitar... The rest is history!!! My first ever gig was at a good friend of mine joes bar, names 'the Shakespeare'.
Right now, in 10 years, he wants…"to still be in Samui... Or atleast Thailand!! But you never know!! I'm always open to new ideas!"
I think my life philosophy is much the same as many other people that have made the move to a new location....
Cease the day!!! Jump! See where you land!!! Take a risk, you only get 1 life!!!
