Just over a week ago, before her birthday Andrea was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident.
Andrea, who has lived on and off on Phangan for the last four years after moving from England, is currently in Vachira Hospital after a motorbike crash near Chalong Circle on July 6.
Details of the crash are sketchy as Miss Woodmansey cannot remember anything before or after the crash, but it is understood she lost control of her bike on a wet road on her way home to Chalong, and may have crashed into a vehicle. She was wearing a helmet at the time.
Friends drove past and stopped, without realising it was her, and did CPR and got her to hospital.
Andrea has suffered two major breaks in one leg, a broken clavicle, a severely damaged patella, several skull fractures, major nerve damage.
With a dislocated hip - her leg is currently in traction to help with the healing, she has a broken left femur, a fractured left kneecap, a fractured right arm, a torn liver, a collapsed lung, as well as her right knee tearing open.
She is in a government hospital in Thailand and has undergone two rounds of surgery thus far, but sadly as she had no insurance the care being given is an absolute minimum and unlikely to meet the standard that is needed for a full recovery.
Currently her Mother and friends are caring for her in the hospital as even basics such as sanitation are not covered in this type of hospital.
With increasing medical costs, family and friends are trying to raise the estimated B1 million required to get her back to the UK to seek specialist treatment for her arm.
“I’ve got family there and it’s free, at home we have NHS (the National Health Service),” she explains.
A major concern at the moment is her Brachial plexus injury. There is a concern that bone marrow is leaking which can seriously endanger her life - it is a slim risk, but there nonetheless.
Another concerning injury is there is no feeling in her right arm due to nerve damage.
The chances of her losing her right arm without the correct care at the moment are sadly very high. “I’ve got no feeling in my arm and I could lose it."
There are two options which could save her life, arm or both.
One is to repatriate Andrea, and have her mother, who is a nurse fly back with her to a specialist in the UK. The other is to have her taken to the Phuket Bangkok hospital and have the required specialist surgeon flown out to her. Both will be very expensive and costs are likely to be in excess of twenty five thousand pounds.
Friends and family have raised nearly 10,000 pounds (B470,000), which will cover her stay at Vachira Hospital so far.
But without medical insurance, Andrea's mother wants her daughter to go back to the UK where she can get free specialised care which will hopefully be able to save the nerve in her arm.
Transporting her back in her current state will cost around 31,500 pounds (roughly B1.4 million), which they have to pay upfront.
