James Trystan on Phangan
Half of the MoS residing big room duo Filth & Splendour and label head at Itch Records -James Trystan is fast-becoming a definitive production force under his birth moniker too. Through releases on Fukai, Dojo and Twisted Freq - James has nurtured a fresh palette that lurks in deeper, more atmospheric waters and toys with subtle emotive melodies without ever losing his flagrant knack for plump, undulating grooves. And having now struck a long term relationship with one of Europe's most respected bastions of credible house music - Great Stuff - James' musical career is now very much a two-pronged attack.
Music to make your booty shake!
What is your Koh Phangan story?
I’ve just moved here from the UK, for how long I’m not sure.
It has put me in a better location to access and explore the rest of Asia. Plus, I can also put some concentrated efforts on new productions without the usual hustle and bustle distractions of home.
Where on Koh Phangan did you play?
So far I’ve played Open Air Festival, Merkaba Bar and Sandcastle. All of these venues have had a great vibe and response.
I am currently starting a new night with Hawie at Sandcastle Club in Haad Rin, starting every week from the 22nd January. We’ve decided to call it Derailed. Hawie and I are also starting a bi-weekly event called Deep Down at Sunset Pearl Bar. I’ve also got a few gigs in-between at Jungle Exp Party, Open Air, Loi Lay etc as well as some short adventures outside of Thailand.
What do you think about Koh Phangan music and party scene?
It’s blowing up, that’s easy for anyone who’s been coming here for more that 5 years to see. How it develops from now on is in the hands of the Dj’s and of course the promoters. The overall standard of the main parties is high with a host of regular dj’s who know how to rock the party. It’s also great to finally see solid names coming over on tour.
What do you feel you brought to the Phangan scene?
Something a little different ;) and a passion to raise the bar and help push this island forward towards what could possibly be the next Ibiza.
How do you spend your free time on the island?
I like to go to other parties, write music, eat with my mates and go to the gym.
What projects are you currently involved with and what are your next projects?
I’m just in the process of getting the vocals done for 4 new original tracks. I’m waiting for my remix of The Plump Djs to land, Original coming out on Seamless Recordings in March. I’ll also be doing a bunch of cool remixes this year…more info on that soon
How did you get to where you are today?
I worked hard on keeping the productions flowing. This year I may hit my 100th record mark, which seems pretty nuts when I think about it! From the first day that decided this was what I wanted to do I’ve been on a mission to see it through. Only after 7 years of full on commitment, financial investment, ups and downs does, it feel like I’m getting closer to my goal.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I’m not the best at looking into the future but I’m certain I’ll be involved with music at some level. All I can hope is that my passion with provide enough for me to stay in the game.
What is your life philosophy?
Dream. Believe. Achieve.
