Have you ever wondered how the Full Moon Party really began?
The following movie is a live interview we had with Mr Kaaw - Prateeb Tuaycharern, about Koh Phangan and The Full Moon Party.
Everyone in Koh Phangan knows his name. Mr. Kaaw, the mayor of Koh Phangan, gives us his outlook on this story, from a local perspective, regarding the true beginnings of what is now considered as one of the most famous events in the world, The Full Moon Party.
He won the last election, gaining his current political position, with the Motto:
It is impossible for me to choose any one thing about my birth, and I was not born in Koh Phangan.
I can, however, decide where I wish to die, and I choose this island here.
I am getting old now and the only thing I want to do till the moment I die is do good things for an even better Koh Phangan.
Having lived on Koh Phangan since a very young age (before the Full Moon Party even started) Mr Kaaw has seen the rise of this island and gives much thanks to the foreigners for playing a large role in its advancement. He recalls,
“In the beginning, before the parties and such, we didn’t even have electricity. We were using oil lanterns for lighting!”
He wants to remind everyone that lives here to "be kind and fair to all the islands visitors because they are the reason that this island is what it is today; and their enthusiasm to visit and return is what keeps it going, in a positive direction on, well into the future".
Big thanks for all the dear friends that helped with making this interview possible: P' Chai and Georgia (Jungle Experience Party), Kaewklao Kaewbunjong (KPT Language School) and Pang Wichiantiab (The Coast resort) for her smart and charming performance.
