Do you feel shy to dance?
You wanna learn some basic moves that will have you groovin and shakin all night long? Come and join dance classes with professional dance instructor Eva Wellness.
Eva is a dancer at Jungle Experience parties, professional dance instructor and wellness practitioners on Koh Phangan. We speak to her ahead of her up-coming classes at Phanganist hostel THIS THURSDAY 12th JAN.
Eva, what’s your Koh Phangan story…
I’m here to bring fun and wellness to the island, to teach people how to move their bodies and take care of their bodies in a balanced fashion. Party is encouraged - and with a touch of wellness you can find the perfect medium. You don’t have to be health fanatic to look good and feel good.
I encourage wellness 80% of the time and party 20% of the time…. Or at least aim for 50/50!
When did you first start dancing?
I only started dancing in my 20s. I loved going to clubs but I felt shy to dance and I always had to do three tequila shots before I had the courage to start moving. And I’m not quite sure if I looked any good doing it!
In University I signed up for 10 dance classes, learnt the basics and just started practicing at home in front of the mirror. Then to learn different dance styles, every few months I would take a couple more dance lessons and that’s it!
Then, I started going to parties, looking at different dancers and just copying one move at a time. You can learn just one move and then incorporate it into what you’ve already got.
What will you bring to the dance classes at Phanganist hostel?
My aim is to have a good time. I teach basic steps that you can mix up and use over and over again all night. I teach a variety of styles included hip hop, house dancing, reggaeton and sexy dance moves for ladies.
What would you say to people who maybe feel shy like you used to?
The only way you can get over your shyness is to start practicing in front of the mirror. Start with one move, add another and before you know it, you’re shaking your booty and having a good time!
What’s your favourite thing about dancing?
The music! I love to just feel the music and let my body flow to it however it wants to. There’s no right or wrong way to dance as long as you’re having a good time.
Did you experience a breakthrough moment with your dancing?
I had a teacher that taught me to focus on different body parts. So, I stopped panicking trying to remember the moves. I would just think about my body part and how I can move it. Then, I just started creating my own style.
That’s how I teach dance now, I break it up into body parts, teaching basic moves for each body part. I teach head movements, shoulder movement, arms, legs, bum and feet.
What benefits people will get from trying a class?
Personally, when I started dancing, i started to feel more feminine and more free. I started to enjoy the parties more. Then, I didn’t even feel the need to get drunk. Now I just have one or two drinks for a little buzz.
Leave us with your dance philosophy……
Become best friends with the mirror and practice any time you can! But, just remember this - smile and have a good time!
I’ve even been known to practice in toilets. Dancing is infectious! When people see you dancing, most of the time they want to join you or just give you a thumbs up.
Thanks for speaking to us Eva, we can’t wait for your classes!
